If you've been looking for that perfect gift for a chess playing "friend", now's your chance. Convekta is running two specials. The first is free shipping, and the second is a package of their World Champion CDs. You can find reviews of the Tal, Capablanca, Alekhine and Lasker CDs on www.chessreviews.com. I have a review and some pictures of the Botvinnik CD here.

In addition, Convekta has released two CDs on the French and Sicilian. As some of you may know, Convekta offers very few opening CDs, and the release of these two are somewhat of a surprise. I've had an opportunity to take a quick look at a beta version, so I've taken a few screen shots.

The CD is very well organized, with a nice tree layout of all the important variations:

[tree view]

It also does not skimp on high-quality commented games. You'll notice extensive comments (in English and Informant symbols) that talk about  important ideas:

The Kalinin programs both use a specially modified version of Chess Assistant 7 to display data. Here you see one of the things you can do with the new graphical layout (in the interest of making the graphic smaller, I've made things appear a bit squished, on a high res display, it looks fantastic). On the left is a theoretical article, on the right, an example game:

Note that this screen shot is from a beta version. The final version may look slightly different.

And now for something completely different...

As I mentioned in the teaser to this article, there is also a new update for CA 7 being tested. This update fixes some bugs, and adds a number of new features. When the update becomes available, I will post a news item. You can also use the automatic update feature as well, it will be called build 730.
